Fuel filter icing sucks. I t sucks a lot. It sucks a really extra lot when it happens half way to the round-bale stack, far from all garages and electrical outlets.

Diesel 911 is in the tank. Space heater is blowing at the fuel filters. It’s the Zetor of course. We tried to tow it back with the truck and that was a no go. snow, plus 10 000lbs, plus stiff oils = no go. dragged out the long extension cords...

It might end up sitt ing there overnight... it’s just too fucking cold to work on it and it’s supposed to be 9F tomorrow.

I hear you there, we had to drag the side by side to the garage to get the fuel lines moving again. I don’t know what magic they’ve baked into the Jeep but that thing is apparently impossible to ice up. Sat outside and remote started at -10F air temp with the wind howling. I know it has heaters for the DEF tank and lines and injector but not sure what the actual fuel system has.

Do you have to crack the injector lines and bleed air from the system after a fuel gelling situation?

We were normally ok with work trucks until they sat at -40C for a week. Usually if they ran the day before they would run again. When we were away at camp and they were parked at the airfield they froze up good.

I started my 22re at -45 once. I bet I knocked 5 years off it’s life that day.

Winter blend diesel is a must. So is making sure the water separator is working and draining it regularly.

At least it's not draining the battery via the heating coil in the DEF tank to stop it from turning into a brick.

When I was in the Army, around 1990, I was stationed in Germany in a stupid, pointless military intelligence battalion. I was in charge of POL: Petrolium, Oil & Lubricants. I never drained the separators and it got really cold, like 20 deg F — joke there — and the water in the bottom of the separators turned to slushy ice. We had a big inspection and I had beautiful newly painted signs everywhere and my assistant had spiffy bookkeeping and hot coffee and cocoa for the inspectors and they said my equipment was outstanding and I got an Army Achievement Medal. And both trucks would not start and would’ve had to be towed into the woods and couldn’t issue any fuel even when we got there. True story.

Where are you located?

Yeah my car had to crank over several more times than usual this morning in -10 F weather. At one point on my 2hr drive I saw -14.

IIRC most if not all common rail systems are self-priming.

That’s good. I know my brother had to go through all of that every time the fuel pump died on his 24V cummins. It seemed like a PITA haha

The Zetor is a mechanical injection engine, no t common rail. Luckily it has a ma nual priming pump to purge the lines without bleeding while cranking.

Its running now. I got some heat into the block, the temp guage is off the peg, but I’m gonna let the fuel recirculate for another hour or so before I try loading the engine. Make sure there’s enough heat in the system to keep the parafin in suspension...

The red one called Iso-Heet can be used for diesel :o)

It’s the yellow/blue bottle just called Heet that cannot be used in a diesel.

It was brutal today in Michigan. The mild December we had makes it feel worse.

Stay warm if ya can.

Say “ Isopropyl alcohol" in a diesel forum and see how long the flame suit lasts... Not that I really have enough experience to know from experience, but I know the arguments rage hard...
